what extent you think the scale is a valid measure of what it sets out to measure and why it is important to be able to measure this in public health research.

Assessment Brief

The assessment consists of a single piece of coursework. You will be provided with a widely used health-related measurement scale. As far as possible, a different scale will be provided for each student. You will need to produce an individual presentation of 15 minutes and present it to an audience of your peers. The presentation will be live and recorded. A further 5 minutes will be allowed for questions. Your presentation should cover:

  1. The background to the scale (what it is supposed to measure, how it was developed, how it is scored, etc.) using published sources (journals and the internet).
  2. To what extent you think the scale is a valid measure of what it sets out to measure and why it is important to be able to measure this in public health research.
  3. A summary of the results of published findings from at least 3 sources which have used the scale. Wherever possible you should use library databases to identify peer-reviewed journal articles where the scale has been used; you should AVOID articles which only discuss validation of the scale.
  4. A discussion of the limitations of the scale, as well as possible reasons for any differences between the results of different studies.
