Assessment Guidelines
Produce a coursework that offers students the ability to demonstrate their developing knowledge and application of the teaching and learning material covered in weeks 1 to 5. It also encourages students to develop their thoughts and perspectives on theories and concepts.

Assessment Task

The oil and gas value chain is complex and continuously evolving. Numerous challenges arise throughout this value chain, and can vary by region and country due to unique regulatory frameworks and circumstances. Your task is to produce a coursework that explores the key current challenges faced by oil and gas companies in their operations in some areas along the value chain. Specifically, the coursework should:
(1) Define the and analyse key current challenges in two of the following areas, supporting your analysis with examples from different countries or projects:

  • Exploration and production
  • Transportation and logistics
  • Marketing and distribution
  • Contractual and fiscal terms

(2) Critically discuss the impacts associated with the challenges in the two selected areas.

(3) Review and critically evaluate strategies or solutions that oil and gas companies have employed to address the challenges, and propose additional solutions that can be adopted.

Suggestions

  • The use of tables for summary or comparison purposes is encouraged. However, the tables should complement the discussion (main text), not replace it.
  • The use of data in an illustrative (figures, diagrams) or tabular (tables) format is encouraged. However, all figures, tables, etc. should be appropriately labelled, captioned and referenced, as well mentioned and described in the main text.
  1. Understanding and Reading: The depth of your reading (number, range and quality of sources) and understanding of it. You are expected to read the essential and further readings to support your argument/discussion; you cannot rely on personal opinion or unsupported statements.
  2. Critical Analysis: The level of critical analysis in your writing and the quality of the argument developed. You cannot rely on simple description, but have to apply knowledge and theory from the readings to critically engage with the material.
  3. Structure: Your ability to develop a clear, logical structure for your coursework which addresses the required points of the task and guides the reader. Your coursework should include a clear introduction, a cogently argued main body, and a conclusion that summarises the argument and answers the overall question.
  4. Presentation and Referencing: Your ability to express yourself clearly in English using appropriate terminology, correct spelling and grammar. The extent to which your coursework is correctly referenced using the Harvard system of referencing in-text and with a reference list.
