Purpose
Lectures 2 and 3 presented concepts of power, empowerment and community involvement, and the additional resource for Tutorial 2 was a video of Dr. Glenn Laverack discussing his many years of field work and global experience in public health. Specifically, Dr. Laverack related examples of pandemics and epidemics (known as ‘outbreaks’) in the context of empowerment and communities. One component focused on the importance of ‘social and cultural competence’ during management of the outbreaks. The video generated valuable discussion in the tutorials and this task enables students to choose a topic and learn about a range of outbreaks from the past to embed the concepts and reflect on the importance of cultural competence.
Identify and outline an example of a healthcare service, organisation or institution that considers local Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander values, knowledges and cultural context in its design and delivery. Link the importance of self-determination to effective healthcare delivery for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in your answer.
