Task 1: Understanding Abuse and Safeguarding

Task 1a

Abuse can happen in ways. It is crucial for practitioners to recognize the signs and symptoms. You need to research and explain:

• What safeguarding means and how it relates to child protection
• What you need to know about safeguarding from your training
• Types of abuse including emotional sexual abuse and neglect. You can use a table to show this
• Other forms of abuse such as financial abuse and domestic abuse
• New issues like FGM, county lines and cuckooing

Task 1b

Bullying is also a form of abuse. For this section:

• Research types of bullying including cyberbullying, verbal, emotional and physical bullying
• Explain how these types of bullying happen
• Outline what to do when you suspect bullying
• Describe how to support the child and their family
• Create a poster about safety risks, including social media, internet use and electronic communication

• How to respond to disclosure including what to do and what not to do
• How to keep evidence safe
• Why it is crucial to keep secure records
• How to explain information sharing to the child
• Why children might not tell you about abuse
• Behaviors that might show harm and how to support them

Task 3b

Identify things that make children more vulnerable in care

• Explain what whistleblowing is and what to do
• Describe how whistleblowers are protected
• Explain when some people might be restricted during investigations
• Discuss the importance of maintaining safe boundaries

Task 3c

Describe child exploitation and its link to human trafficking

• Identify patterns used by gangs, groups and individuals to groom children
• Explain how to support victims of exploitation

Task 4: Serious Case Reviews

Serious case reviews help improve safeguarding practices.

• Choose a case study, like Victoria Climbié or Baby P
• Summarize the case. Evaluate its impact on laws, policies and professional practice

• Provide a summary. Reflect on what we can learn from these cases

Task 5: Multi-Agency Working

Explain why it is essential to work with other professionals

• Discuss the importance of sharing information

Task 6: Supporting Children After Abuse

Explain the importance of building trust and positive relationships

• Describe how to support children dealing with trauma, fear and anxiety

• Explain how to empower children to make decisions
• Discuss strategies that promote confidence, resilience and emotional well-being
