Learners are required to complete a project in which they plan, carry out, and evaluate a child observation study within an ELC setting.

Performance Criteria:
You are required to plan, carry out, and evaluate a child observation study within your ELC setting. This study must focus on one child and include 4 different methods for observation.

The following domains of development must be considered in the observation design.

  • Social and Emotional
  • Physical
  • Cognitive
  • Language

You will be required to conclude, recommend activities for the child and evaluate your own effectiveness. You must structure your project as follows:  Introduction (provide a brief overview of the child chosen).

  • Aims of the observation study (to include expected benefits).
  • Types of observation to be used and the rationale for each.
  • Evidence of consultation with the following stakeholders: 1) the child, 2) the parent/guardian, 3) Colleagues.
  • Programme of observation – timetable.
  • Completed observations – including signed observation design sheets.
  • 5 conclusions from the completed study.
  • 5 recommendations to further support the child’s learning and development. Link to relevant theory to support.
