Assignment Task

Read the following scenario and prepare a report with the guidelines provided.

Scenario: Covid-19 has affected all organisations; and the world as we have known it, no longer exists. Throughout the world, organisations need to relook at the way they operate. Your task is to find a client organisation that has to change and help them manage this change. The organisation you need to engage with could be the organisation you work for, or one in which you are involved in in your private capacity or any other organisation you know that might need assistance (perhaps even an organisation in which a friend or family member works). Engage with the key decision maker in the organisation and obtain input about the challenges, what needs to change and the consequences of not changing. Find other key stakeholders who can provide more information and engage with them about the challenges and possible solutions. Apply change tools and models and develop a change strategy and plan. Also show how the organisation can lead its stakeholders in developing and adopting the strategy for change, how they should plan to implement the chosen change strategy and how they should deal with resistance. Reflect what you have learnt from this process and what you could have been done better.

The written report should include the following:

1. Learners need to research information from their chosen organisation and develop a report on planning strategic change in that organisation. This could be achieved by showing that they understand the different approaches to models of change management; a minimum of two established models, highlighting the differences in approach. In the introduction to their report learners need to evaluate the relevance of the models of strategic change, using examples from organisations. They need to explain why the models for change are appropriate in their selected examples.

2. Learners are expected to show an understanding of the forces that are impacting on an organisation and driving the need for change. Showing understanding needs to be more than just a list of forces and change drivers. Learners need to demonstrate that they have researched and examined the current position of the organisation and that they are able to assess the factors in the organisation that are driving the need for change. This should by followed by discussing the implications of not responding to change.

  • Two change management models: E.G Bridges transition Model and Lewis model
  • Explain the models, ensure to highlight the difference between the two models, apply both the models to the chosen organization, and finally will provide justification for applying these two models to the chosen organization.

3. Learners are expected to show that they understand the different strategies that are available in the process of change management. They need to develop an appropriate strategy for change in the selected organisation and show how they would involve stakeholders in the development of this strategy. Learners need to create a strategy for managing resistance to change that is appropriate to their selected organisation. It needs to address the issues and provide a workable approach to overcome the resistance

  • Appropriate strategy for change management: Kotters 8 step or ADKAR
  • Stakeholder management: you can go through the 5 steps process.
  • Resistance to change: Explain resistance to change (RTC), why it is an issue, and apply Kotter Schlesinger’s model of overcoming RTC

4. The learners are expected to understand the role of leadership in effective change management. This could be achieved by discussing the role of leadership in situation demonstrated in the scenario. How can a leader ensure a smooth transition during change, especially from the human side of change?
