Concept of Waste Management Assessment Answer

Assignment Task

The essence of societal change lies in individual transformation. This principle resonates with my approach throughout the Mangetout Moment assignment.

The term "Mangeout moment" reflects a surge of guilt prompting self-reflection. For me, it immediately evoked thoughts on Waste Management. In Malaysia, the staggering daily waste production highlights a pressing issue. Despite efforts to promote recycling, only a fraction of waste is recycled. To address this, the Malaysian government initiated waste separation enforcement, significantly reducing solid waste. While this initiative has made strides in certain areas, its nationwide implementation remains pending. Therefore, my commitment under the Mangetout momentum is towards individual waste management. I pledge to reduce plastic waste by utilizing recyclable bags and initiating recycling activities. As a Selangor resident, I eagerly await the government`s waste segregation program`s arrival in my state.

Understanding the Process and Setting Up

Before embarking on my pledge, I undertook thorough research on initiating recycling processes. While carrying reusable bags posed no complexity, understanding recycling processes required meticulous planning, especially in the absence of waste segregation in Selangor.

I began by discussing my initiative with family members to streamline the recycling process, particularly in household activities generating plastic waste. To facilitate this, I set up a recyclable box:

The conversation with my family was pivotal in ensuring seamless recycling. However, challenges arose when I forgot to return the recycle bag to the car after using it in the kitchen. To address this, I implemented a reminder system inspired by a lecture on Green Technology Systems. According to Dr. Zeeda, people may not harbor negative attitudes towards environmental protection but require reminders to engage in pro-environmental behaviors. Thus, using prompts like the one below helped me remember to bring the recycle bag every time I left the house.

`The Backlash` & Tough Call

While recycling proceeded smoothly initially, the accumulation of recyclable waste attracted unwanted guests like insects. With almost 90% of recyclable waste comprising food or drink packaging, insects became a prevalent issue, necessitating immediate waste disposal to prevent odor and maintain hygiene. However, I continued segregating unaffected waste items like enclosed drinking bottles and detergent bottles.

Residual wastes were neatly packed into plastic bags or containers for disposal twice a week. Meanwhile, recyclable waste was similarly packed and placed beside the trash bin for weekly collection. However, residents in certain areas resorted to placing recyclable items beside trash bins, leading to unhygienic conditions. Moreover, some garbage truck operators prioritized collecting lucrative items like aluminum cans and mineral bottles, leaving food containers and liquid food products uncollected.

To address these challenges, steps can be taken:

  1. Introduction of Corn Starch Plastic Bags
  2. Curbing Behavioral Affordance through Prompts

Conclusion

In conclusion, individual efforts play a crucial role in waste management. By implementing practical solutions and fostering behavioral change, we can contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable environment.
