NS202 Provide details of where and how you searched for research evidence to answer the clinical question.

APPENDIX 1: Assignment Guidelines – what to include in your assignment.

Clinical Question: State your clinical question in PICOT format.

Search for Evidence: Provide details of where and how you searched for research evidence to answer the clinical question.

Evidence selected: (1) Provide a full reference for the selected evidence using the Harvard style of referencing. (2) State the level of the evidence selected. (3) Provide details of its research approach (quantitative or qualitative) and its specific methodology (e.g. the phenomenological study, randomized control trial, ethnographic study, quasi-experimental, for example).

Please note: in the course of this module you will only be prepared to critically appraise single quantitative OR single qualitative research studies. You will not be prepared for, and therefore must not select the following types of research evidence:

  • Literature reviews
  • Systematic reviews
  • Meta-analyses or meta-syntheses of research
  • Mixed methods research
  • Reports
  • Commentaries
  • Editorials

Appraise: Undertake a critical appraisal of your selected evidence using the prescribed critical appraisal tool that is appropriate to the nature of the selected evidence (quantitative o qualitative). You must answer the six critical appraisal questions listed in Appendix 2 (the quantitative questions if your evidence is a quantitative study OR the qualitative questions if your evidence is a qualitative study). Your answers to these questions should be detailed providing rationale (reasons) for your answers. Support your answers with relevant, good quality sources using the Harvard style of referencing.

Conclusion: Having undertaken the critical appraisal you must decide if:

  1. the evidence is good quality / robust;
  2. it adequately answers your clinical question;
  3. it can/should be used to inform nursing care/practice
