Leadership Presentation

Portfolio: Part 1 - Individual Leadership Presentation: Academic analysis and application of leadership theory, including self-assessment of leadership traits, skills, style

LO1: Analyse current leadership theories and models and demonstrate how these are applied in practice

The objective of this presentation is to showcase an understanding of Leadership by critiquing and applying leadership theory to a selected leader. Additionally, it involves analyzing and expanding upon my self-assessment of leadership traits and skills, which will be elaborated further in Part 2 of the portfolio.

Your Individual presentation should be a 5-minute video focusing on Leadership. Include a YouTube video link at the bottom of your portfolio cover page, along with screenshots of up to 7 PowerPoint slides supporting your video content. The purpose of this presentation is to exhibit an understanding of Leadership by critiquing and applying leadership theory to your chosen leader.

For Part A of the portfolio, your presentation must demonstrate your grasp of leadership theory. Choose a leader and critically apply at least 2 types of leadership theory studied in the module (e.g., Trait and Transformational Theory). Use academic referencing from module materials such as Northouse and Kotter to illustrate how the leader embodies (or doesn`t) the theory, and provide a critique of the theory`s application. For instance, delve into Trait Theory - how do the leader`s traits, behaviors, or style align with the 4I`s of Transformational Theory? You might also explore the implications of `charisma in business` or ethical leadership. What does the theory suggest, and how does it relate to your chosen leader?

Following self-administered leadership style questionnaires, this presentation will briefly evaluate your style against the leadership theories studied and delve deeper into self-reflection in your Portfolio.

Part 2: Self-reflective Piece

  1. Choose a leader from the following categories:

    • Politics
    • Fashion
    • Retail
    • Sport
    • Technology
    • Media
  2. Analyze and critically apply 2 appropriate leadership theories/models discussed during the first semester.

  3. Utilize recommended academic journal articles and books from weblearn and the reading list in your presentation, ensuring correct Harvard Referencing.

  4. Your Presentation must include 7 references from at least 3 academic journal articles studied in the module, along with wider academic readings (e.g., Northouse, FT, Economist, Forbes).

Further develop your argumentation in your presentation with these aspects:

  • Utilize academic references (e.g., Kotter, Northouse) with Harvard Referencing.
  • Explore what defines your chosen leader as a leader, supported by academic references.
  • Discuss specific leadership models and theories applicable to their leadership approach. Use Harvard academic referencing.
  • Examine their leadership style, referencing media quotes.
  • Identify demonstrated traits/characteristics and their relevance. Reference these.
  • Highlight the area of leadership they excel in (e.g., Skills/behavior/situational/transformational), using module theory.
  • Briefly outline their media portrayal and relate it to their leadership style/internal leadership. Use quality business references (e.g., FT, Economist, Forbes, Trade press).
  • Assess their successes and failures.
  • Extract business lessons from your chosen leader.
  • Incorporate a variety of media (e.g., radio/TV interview clips, Twitter feed, newspaper, etc.).
