The Art of Effective Lesson Planning Enhancing Student Engagement Assignment

Assignment Task

Culturally Inclusive Lesson Plan

Identify a lesson plan that you have developed for another unit or implemented in your practicum teaching (no more than two pages in single spacing). If you have not developed a lesson plan yet, then you can use someone else’s lesson plan. Please note that the quality of the original lesson plan does not matter because your task is to revise it in a way that demonstrates what you have learned through this unit. Attach your 1700-word explanation about the changes that you have made in relation to the three elements (representation of diversity, integration of various languages and dialects of English, integration of explicit linguistic scaffolding). The classroom context in which the lesson plan is to be implemented can be real or hypothetical, but it has to have at least 3 EAL/D students (preferably with differing backgrounds) for whom you will have to implement various language support strategies. Use the EAL/D ‘learner phases’ (see EAL/D Advice for Schools 2020) to briefly describe the level of their English language competency.

Context

Provide a brief discussion of the classroom context in which the revised lesson plan is to be implemented. The context can be real or hypothetical. Describe the level of English language proficiency of the EAL/D students in the classroom, using the EAL/D learner phases. Preview which pedagogy or pedagogies you are drawing on.

Three Elements

  1. Representation of Diversity

    • Discuss the changes you have made to the original lesson plan to address the representation of diversity.
    • Identify and discuss the pedagogy or pedagogies (Culturally Responsive Pedagogy, Genre Pedagogy, Intercultural Understanding) in relation to the changes you have made.
  2. Integration of Various Languages and Dialects of English

    • Discuss the changes you have made to the original lesson plan to address the integration of various languages and dialects of English.
    • Identify and discuss the pedagogy or pedagogies (Culturally Responsive Pedagogy, Genre Pedagogy, Intercultural Understanding) in relation to the changes you have made.
  3. Integration of Explicit Linguistic Scaffolding

    • Discuss the changes you have made to the original lesson plan to address the integration of explicit linguistic scaffolding.
    • Identify and discuss the pedagogy or pedagogies (Culturally Responsive Pedagogy, Genre Pedagogy, Intercultural Understanding) in relation to the changes you have made.

Suggested Steps for Assignment Completion

  1. Read the Assignment Description Carefully:

    • Understand the assessment criteria and identify a lesson plan you want to revise.
  2. Describe the Classroom Context:

    • Design the context for which your lesson revision will be implemented (hypothetical or real). It must have at least three EAL/D students for whom you will have to provide support.
    • Use the EAL/D ‘learner phases’ to describe their English language proficiency.
  3. Review the Unit Readings:

    • Discuss the three elements in relation to the three pedagogies (Culturally Responsive Pedagogy, Genre Pedagogy, Intercultural Understanding).
  4. Identify Shortcomings and Revise the Original Lesson Plan:

    • Note that changes to the original lesson plan must be no more than 300 words.
    • Underline all the changes you have made to the original lesson plan.
  5. Discuss Revisions and Their Rationale:

    • Explain how the revisions are informed by key concepts, being mindful of the word limit.
  6. Compile and Proofread:

    • Join the lesson plan (place the lesson plan at the beginning of the assignment) and the essay explaining the revisions. Proofread and submit.
