PSY30003 - The Psychometric Properties Reliability, Validity Final scale Assignment

Assignment Task

Your primary objective is to undertake an exploratory factor analysis to construct a robust measure of trust, followed by an evaluation of its psychometric properties, including reliability and validity.

Background

Against the backdrop of contemporary socio-political dynamics, a pervasive atmosphere of skepticism surrounds politicians. Despite its fundamental role in societal cohesion, trust remains an elusive concept, characterized by diverse dimensions and nuanced interpretations (PytlikZilla & Kimbrough, 2016). Nonetheless, trust typically entails the cultivation of positive expectations by a trustor towards a target, coupled with a willingness to exhibit vulnerability or reliance (Mayer et al., 1995).

Social trust, distinct from its interpersonal counterpart, arises when individuals extend trust to entities with whom they lack personal familiarity or extensive knowledge (Hendriks et al., 2016). Unlike interpersonal trust, social trust often lacks the foundation of direct prior experience, leaving individuals devoid of insights into the motives, interests, or capabilities of the trustee.

Trust formation is contingent upon several factors, including perceived ability/competence, benevolence, and integrity (Mayer et al., 1995). However, subtle variations in these factors have been observed. Critchley (2008), for instance, devised a measure to assess trust in scientists predicated on the dimensions of self-interest, benevolence, and competence. Similarly, Hendriks et al. (2016) proposed a framework to evaluate trust in online science communicators, encompassing expertise, integrity, and benevolence.

Remarkably scarce empirical research exists on quantifying trust in politicians. Existing studies often rely on rudimentary single-item measures to gauge trust in political entities.

Your mission is to spearhead the development of a comprehensive measure of trust in politicians, anchored in the dimensions of self-interest, integrity, benevolence, and competence.
