NRSG400 - Nursing Leadership for Quality Care Assignment

Assignment Task:

Crafting a Nursing Policy Brief for Effective Leadership in Healthcare

A briefing note serves as a concise means to inform decision-makers about pertinent issues, providing background information, key considerations, options, and recommended actions (McMaster University, 2020). Nurses, recognized as political players and leaders in healthcare (Canadian Nurses Association, 2009), play a pivotal role in advocating for innovative care practices and models within Canada`s healthcare system.

In alignment with the objectives of N411, students are tasked with refining their skills in identifying, selecting, and persuading stakeholders about the significance of an issue, while offering actionable recommendations. This assignment presents an opportunity for students to showcase their understanding of practice problems and to advocate for meaningful change effectively.

For this assignment, students are required to develop an original brief, distinct from previous submissions, focusing on an aspect of British Columbia`s health priorities. Attention should be given to BC`s health priorities and the Nursing Policy Secretariat Statement to address overarching goals and visions outlined by the Ministry of Health. Moreover, students are encouraged to draw from their clinical experiences to identify gaps in addressing BC`s health priorities or the Nursing Policy Secretariat`s vision.

To complete the assignment, students must:

  1. Select a briefing note template (Appendix A provides a suggestion).
  2. Identify the issue of concern, aligning with BC`s health priorities and Nursing Secretariat recommendations.
  3. Determine key points and present them persuasively.
  4. Address the policy to the BC Ministry of Health.
  5. Craft a policy brief that persuades the Ministry of Health to take action, specifying the action required, timeframe, and rationale.
  6. Review the marking rubric to ensure all components are addressed.

Background:

Provide an overview of the issue prompting the brief, discussing the target population and the necessity of addressing the issue.

Discussion/Analysis: Explore and analyze the issue further, explaining the choice to address it, current interventions, advantages, challenges, and what decision-makers should understand.

Roles and Responsibilities: Outline the parties responsible for implementing the change.

Recommendations: Describe how interventions proposed in the brief can promote health, reduce harm, and meet Ministry targets, concluding with why the Ministry should consider the proposal.

This assignment offers students a platform to advocate for meaningful change in healthcare leadership, aligning with the vision and priorities outlined by the Ministry of Health and the Nursing Policy Secretariat.
