Levelling Survey and Volume Calculation Report for Excavation Assignment

Assignment Task: Levelling Survey and Volume Calculation Report for Excavation

Introduction: The university requires the grass-covered slope/mound near the Fasset Road entrance (Penrhyn Road campus) to be excavated down to the level of the current surface of the adjacent parking bays. This report concerns the determination of the volume of soil to be excavated for this purpose through a levelling survey.

Key Objectives:

  1. Safety Risk Assessment:

    • Conduct a comprehensive safety risk assessment for the excavation work as per the relevant session instructions.
  2. Levelling Survey:

    • Perform the levelling survey as specified in the instructions, including sketches, calculations, and quality evaluations.
  3. Volume Calculation:

    • Utilize the survey results to calculate the volume of soil to be removed from the project site, considering a bulk density of 1.55 t m-3, which impacts the number of required lorries.

General Instructions:

  • Present the report in a technical written format with appropriate sketches, diagrams, and calculations.
  • Include pages from field books showing original booked data.
  • Organize the report according to the specified structure with clear headings, labels for sketches and print-outs, and inclusion of all relevant items within the relevant sections.
  • Ensure individual submission and maintain copies of all relevant information.
  • Limit the report to a maximum of three pages at Arial 11pt single-spaced, excluding Figures, Tables, and References.

Note: Adherence to safety protocols, accurate surveying techniques, and precise volume calculations are crucial for the successful completion of the excavation project. Collaboration with instructors and meticulous documentation of data are essential throughout the process.
