This module aims to give students an understanding of a range of special and additional needs and the effects of such on children and their families.  To develop the student’s knowledge of best practices and contemporary issues regarding special and additional needs.

Assignment Brief

Education for children with special and additional needs has progressed through different eras.  As described by Swan (2000 cited in Flood, 2013, p.5), the era of neglect and denial, the era of the special school and the era of integration and inclusion.

With regard to the provision of services in Ireland, critically discuss the statement above ensuring to include relevant social policy and legislation. A particular focus should be placed upon developments in this area since the 1990s.
