Assessment Instructions

Step 1: Promoting Health Education to patients and clients is an integral part of our role as Registered Nurses (RN). It is a task which requires fundamental clinical knowledge and teaching skills. Patient education has always been a part of health care and in future we will be increasingly required to provide health care education to patients, carers and family members of patients, considering their individual health literacy and their specific cultural backgrounds. Patient skills of self-care and self-management of chronic health conditions are becoming increasingly important. One example is the changes in the educational approach to the patient`s self-management of their asthma. Part of this is learning how to correctly use an inhaler for the medication or medications they will be taking. Your task for this assessment is to develop a PPT teaching tool for a patient education session. You should develop and create:

• a 5-10-minute oral online presentation with a maximum of 10 PowerPoint slides, recorded using Panopto, that presents an educational activity for the following scenario: a patient who has been recently diagnosed with asthma about how to use their inhaler/ puffer correctly. Your teaching tool/ PPT must be aimed at a specific audience. Choose one of the cultural groups we have focused on this semester, for example children, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples etc. and develop your PPT with them in mind. Your video presentation should make it clear who the presentation/ tool will be for (language used/ slide background etc.).
• Remember to include a reference list on your final slide and include at the end of your Panopto video.
• This video presentation should be considered as an educational activity for a specific target audience.
• You should also include ppt slides which will address the specific needs of the particular audience. If you choose to include a video within your your presentation, i.e. a video of you doing something to illustrate/ explain your point then this will be counted/ included within the 10 minutes (i.e. your presentation still has to be 10 minutes long).
