NS202 What claims are made for the generalisability of findings?

APPENDIX 2: CRITICAL APPRAISAL QUESTIONS

QUANTITATIVE Critical Appraisal Questions (adapted from Watson et al, 2008)

  1. Is the design appropriate? Does it fit the research question?
  2. Are adequate descriptions of individuals provided?
  3. Are instruments sufficiently described, is there a rationale for using each tool and are they reliable and valid?
  4. Was the description of any intervention in sufficient detail to be repeatable?
  5. What claims are made for the generalisability of findings?
  6. Were the participants protected from any potential harm?

QUALITATIVE Critical Appraisal Questions (adapted from Watson et al, 2008)

  1. Is the design appropriate? Does it ‘fit’ the research question?
  2. Have researchers represented their preconceptions?
  3. Is the setting and sample described sufficiently?
  4. Were sampling strategies suitable to identify participants and sources to inform the research question?
  5. Did researchers engage with participants and become familiar with the study context?
  6. Was data collection capable of generating rich data?
