MSWPG7211: Explanation of how you will address these issues, to ensure your research is conducted in an ethical manner
Overview
In this course you will work towards developing your own research proposal for a research study of your own design. One of the first steps in developing a research proposal is to assess the existing research and literature on this topic. Therefore, this assessment task is to complete a literature review of your initial research idea.
(My research topic is “Advocacy and older adult suffering from Depression)”
The function of the literature review is to critically analyse the available literature relating to your area of study/research focus and then develop a clear statement of the problem that needs further investigation. You should address the following issues:
- The major themes in this area of study
- The main findings relating to the topic
- Gaps in existing studies
- Where your own research fits within the broader literature – concluding with a clear statement of the research gap, and the research problem that needs further investigation.
Research Process Overview Table:
Following the examples in Chapter 3, use the “Template for Research Process” (on the Assessment Task 3 page, and the basis for the Research Proposal “Work in Progress” sheet you have been using throughout the semester) – develop a short, concise table which identifies the key elements in each of the key areas below. No section should contain more than 10 words)
- Topic
- Includes a short topic statement which clearly and concisely articulates what it is that you want to research
- Introduction: Background and Identification of Research Gaps (please note that this section is NOT included in the examples in the Ezzy chapter - but has been added to provide context)
- “Frames” the context of the research
- Provides a background about the research problem
- Question
- Targeted research question/s that you aim to answer
- Theoretical Framework
- Theory/theories informing your research
- Summary of theory/theories, and justification of relevance to your topic
- Analysis of how your framework has shaped your research proposal
- Research Methodology and Method
Methodology
- Identifies your ‘frame of reference’ for your research project
- Research paradigm which justifies your chosen research method
- Identifies and describes the research methodyou will use, and the data you will be collecting
- Provide justification for relevance of this research method
- Main variables or processes
- Identifies and provides operational definitions for two main dimensions of the topic
- Defining and measuring
- How the variables/processes you have chosen will be defined/measured/observed
- How you will ensure validity/reliability
- Sampling
- Identification of the subset of the population or range of elements that you will study
- Sampling technique/s you will use and justification of relevance to your chosen framework
- Strategy for recruitment of research participants
- Ethics and politics
- Identification of two ethical issues which are specifically relevantto your research project
- Explanation of how you will address these issues, to ensure your research is conducted in an ethical manner
- Analysis and interpretation
- How will you analyse the data that you have collected
- How you will interpret the results?
- How does your theoretical framework inform your analysis and interpretation of results?
- Writing up
- How you will you communicate the findings of your research?
- What ‘form’ will your dissemination of research take (i.e. if you would be submitting a journal article – what journal? If a conference/industry presentation - which one? Why?
