pick one art work from a non-western culture and compare it to a western work of art. The 2 art pieces I picked was The great city of tenochtitlan by Diego Rivera and The foundng Of Tenochtitlan by Page from Codex Mendoza. Mexico. Aztec, 1545.
Your paper should be about 4 -5 pages, aside from illustrations, using a 12-point font, double spaced, written in MLA style. Do not include illustrations with in the text of your essay. Your Illustrations can be included on additional pages at the end of the paper.
Example of how to organize paper and possible points to include:
-Identify the culture, title, year, country or location, size and materials (if known and relevant).
-Identify the art style the two pieces come from and describe the hallmarks of each art style in general.
-Describe how each artwork relates to its respective art style.
-Pick 3-4 of the most obvious or important elements of design and/or composition (focal point, proportions, scale, balance) to analyze the visual characteristics of each work.
-Compare and contrast the visual elements (lines, colors, texture, space, light, shapes, etc.) of both works.
-Describe and analyze the meaning or content of each work and compare and contrast what each piece is trying to communicate. You may also research and include the history of the artwork if it helps clarify the meaning of the work.
-Other points to consider:
What is the culture?
What is the religion?
Where/When/How did these people live?
How does the work relate to the society which produced it?
In what ways is it like or unlike other works of art produced by that society?
(For example, what are its distinguishing characteristics?)
Is there any apparent influence from earlier art forms of that of another society?
Does it influence later art forms of that or of another culture?
How does it fit into a cultural and historical context?
How does it reflect the beliefs of the people who produced it?
