Unit 7 Surveying, Measuring and Setting Out, HNC - Construction in the Built Environment/Construction Management

Assignment - Control Stations, Topographic Surveying and Setting out

Learning Outcome 1: Undertake a survey to establish a station network for horizontal and vertical control.

Learning Outcome 2: Explain the process of undertaking a topographic survey.

Learning Outcome 3: Apply industry standard techniques in the production, transferring and staking out of coordinates
of multiple construction elements.

Learning Outcome 4: Prepare a report on the causes of errors and techniques to improve accuracy, including the use of digital data

Assignment Brief:

You are employed by a local surveying company and have been approached by a national property development company for a full topographic survey of a local plot of land. The topographic survey is required for the initial and detailed design process. Part of the requirement is to set a control network of stations that can be used for future surveys and to aid in the setting out once construction commences.

Task 1:

You are required to produce a report on the plot for submission to the client including the following:

An explanation of the types of control networks that are available
A comparison of the accuracy of the network compared to national standards
An explanation of the process of conducting a topographic survey
A critical analysis of the accuracy achieved including the influence on the topographic survey
The client requires the network to be robust with a minimum of five stations.

Carry out a closed traverse of the station network which includes heights, internal angles and line lengths.
Calculate from the survey the corrected easting, northings and heights of each of the stations. Also include an explanation of how you achieved the corrected co-ordinates and heights.
Describe your coding and data transfer systems in producing the completed survey.

Review the content of a survey in summary form, including the survey`s ability to assist the design team.

Task 2:

Your employer has been approached by a local surveying company to set out a commercial building on a local plot of land.

Task
You are required to extract data from drawings and transfer onto Total Station to allow the setting out process to begin.
Complete the setting out of the building for both vertical and horizontal control. Analyse your accuracy.
Prepare a report for your line manager showing your understanding of the causes of miss-closure and compare to national standards. Evaluate and analyse these causes of miss-closure in relation to the setting out of the commercial building.
Analyse the techniques used to improve accuracy, including the implication of setting out errors and the application of industry standard technology/software.
